Mr Challis Appointed (N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 7. Mr R. L. G. Challis has been appointed Commissioner for New Zealand in Hong Kong with accreditation also as trade commissioner.
“His appointment represents a change in the status of our Hong Kong office, in that it signifies an extension of the functions of the mission to include such political and consular work as is appropriate in a British colonial territory,” said the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) tonight. Mr Challis Is a former New Zealand trade representative in Tokyo and has had wide experience in Asia. He has headed the diplomatic missions in Bangkok, New Delhi and Singapore. For three years he was also ConsulGeneral in San Francisco. Mr Challis will be assisted in trade promotion by Mr R. J. Turnbull, who was appointed Assistant Trade Commissioner in Hong Kong last year. Mr Holyoake also paid tribute to the work of Mr J. P. Costello, who opened the Trade Commission in Hong Kong in 1960 and who will return to New Zealand soon
