20 To Race At Ruapuna Park

This Sunday, for the first time in Canterbury, a distance race for unmodified production saloon cars will be held at the Canterbury Car Club's circuit at Ruapuna Park. About 20 family cars have been entered for the event.

E. Sprague, of Timaru, will drive the Ford Zodiac in which he and H. Heasley gained a second place in the five-hour saloon race at Invercargill recently. The car finished only 11 seconds behind the winning Chrysler Valiant.

G. Tait, of Nelson, well known for his driving of a Corvette-powered Chevrolet, will drive a Chrysler Valiant, while another Zodiac has been entered by R. Tait, also of Nelson, and N. Masters, of Balclutha, has entered a Zephyr.

Late model American saloons are expected to be driven by the Christchurch drivers, R. Silvester and P. Gillum. Silvester has entered a Dodge Dart.

The big cars arc likely to be harried by the Fiat 1500 saloons which will be driven by L. Leonard, of Timaru, and C. Berryman, of Waipara. These cars, the same as those used by the Christchurch City Council traffic depart ment, are expected to be very fast around the corners on the tight Ruapuna circuit

In the smaller classes, Volkswagens will be driven by E. Henshaw and R. Barrar. There will also be a Vauxhall Viva and several Minis. The race will last for 15 minutes. The car to cover the greatest distance in this time will be the winner. Other events on the day include races for modified saloons, sports cars, and racing cars.

Entries for the production car race are:—

Up to 1200 c.c.: E. Henshaw (Volkswagen), R. Barrar (Volkswagen), A. Browne (Volkswagen), V. Blackburn (Datsun), P. L. P. Thompson (Austin Mini), A. Hyde (Austin Mini), J. Money (Morris Mini), L. D. Jones (Morris 1000), D. O. Evans (Vauxhall Viva), B. Brown (Morris 1000). and F. Turner, jun. (Mini).

1200 c.c. to 2000 c.c.: L. Leonard (Fiat 1500) and C. H. Berryman (Fiat 1500). Over 2000 c.c.: G. H. Tait (Chrysler Valiant), R. Tait (Zodiac Mk. Ill), F. E. Sprague (Zodiac Mk. Ill), N. Masters (Zephyr Mk. Ill), R. A. Silvester (Dodge Dart) and P. C. Gillum (unnamed car).
