Fire Destroys Mail
Fire in the guard's van of a train at the Middleton railway yards destroyed a number of parcels in a Post Office mail bag about 6.30 p.m. yesterday. They were consigned to the West Coast. A bag of Christchurch mail for the West Coast was damaged by water, but the letters were dried out and have been forwarded. Some of the contents of a bag of packets were slightly damaged, and those parcels not destroyed have been withheld for resorting. Some railway freight parcels in the same van were also damaged by fire and water. The van was not damaged. Engines from Sockburn and Sydenham attended the call.
