Churchill Fund At £200,000
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 3. The Churchill Memorial Trust Fund appeal has now reached just over £200,000. There are two months left for the fund to reach its hoped for total of £500,000.
In an appeal today, the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) called for a new drive for the fund. He said he had recently written to all mayors and chairmen of county councils and town boards calling for their assistance and leadership in rallying greater support for the appeal. Mr Holyoake, who is president of the national organising committee, said he had asked them to keep local appeals open until June 30.
“I’m quite sure very many more people, business firms and other organisations throughout New Zealand intend to make contributions.” Mr Holyoake said in the meantime, the national organising committee had prepared ways and means of revitalising the trust fund appeal.
He said all committees would soon receive a circular notifying them of the details, and including suggestions for giving new impetus to fund-raising activitiesThe Prime Minister said In a recent assessment made of the progress of the appeal, it was found the response had been “excellent” in some areas—but a
good many other areas had not made a great deal of progress. But Mr Holyoake said the £200,000 raised to date was barely sufficient to provide for five fellowships. “I firmly believe New Zealand can do a good deal better than this, and to worthily remember Sir Winston Churchill we must do so," he said.
