MR W. B. FITCHETT “The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, May 3. One of the better known remaining Gallipoli veterans, Mr Wilfred Brian Fitchett, has died at bis home in Lowry Bay at the age of 73. Mr Fitchett wrote many articles for newspapers in recent years, most of them about early Army days. He departed with the Main Body as a private in 1914 from Wellington, and served in Egypt, Gallipoli, and France. He retured as a lieutenant in 1918, after being severely wounded and gassed. He was awarded his commission in the field, and was twice mentioned in dispatches and recommended for the Military Cross for dangerous work in enemy lines. In the Second World War Mr Fitchett went into Trentham Camp, but was demobilised when the age limit for overseas service was lowered. Mr Fitchett was a particularly active member of the Gallipoli Veterans’ Association. and worked for better pensions for returned servicemen. Mr Fitchett was the only son of Dr. F.
