Shopping Amenities
Retailers in the lower Riccarton shopping area and in other suburbs should heed the warning of the president of the Riccarton Business Association (Mr D. A. Anderson) on the need to provide more amenities for shoppers. Riccarton retailers, said Mr Anderson, should realise that competition was coming “ not from the man next door ” but from progressive retailers in other areas. Most of today’s young housewives have the use of a car for shopping at least one day a week, and they will not think twice about by-passing the nearest shopping area if another group of shops several miles further offers better service and parking facilities. Some off-street parking has already been provided at Riccarton, but more is needed. If projects such as this fail through apathy or disputes about apportioning the cost, every shop in the area will suffer. The Riccarton Business Association has, commendably, embarked on a long-term development plan. It deserves the support of every shopkeeper in the area.
