Hasluck Urges Patience On Indonesian Move

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) SYDNEY, April 29. The proposed takeover of Australian interests in Indonesia should be taken “quietly and patiently at this stage,” the Minister for External Affairs (Mr Paul Hasluck) said yesterday. He was speaking at Sydney airport before leaving to attend the South-east Asia Treaty Organisation council meeting in London. Asked to comment on a report that President Sukarno had ordered the take-over of the Australian Naspro Company in Djakarta, Mr Hasluck said the notice of same had been issued, but the exact status of the decree was indefinite.

“The notice has been served on the company but, as yet, we do not know what the precise effect of that will be,” he said. “We can serve our interests best by taking this decree steadily and quietly, at this stage. “If and when Australia's interests are damaged, or seriously affected, then the Australian Government must do what it can to protect them,” he added. Mr Hasluck said as yet no notice had been served on the airline, Qantas. "The Indonesian Government would be foolish if it took action against Qantas, because it would not be in the nation's own interests,” he said.
