N.Z. Potatoes May Ease Sydney Chip Shortage

SYDNEY, April 29. The 800 fish merchants in Sydney are se«king to import a boat load of potatoes from
New Zealand to ease the local shortage. Potatoes are so expensive at the markets that some fish shops have stopped selling chips. Most of them have increased the price of a small bag of chips to Is 6d. The New South Wales Master Fish Merchants’ Association called a special meeting, last week, to discuss the potato scarcity. It appointed a delegate, Mr J. Macdonald, to negotiate with the Government for permission to import New Zealand potatoes. He had been encouraged by reports from the New Zealand Trade Commissioner's office and has lodged a formal application with the Department of Trade for a licence to import the potatoes. “New Zealand has potatoes to spare and could help fill the gap until the new season’s crop is harvested in November,” he said.
If we do not look to secondary education, our monument to posterity will be broken cars, juke-boxes, bingo halls and betting shops.—Lady Phillips.
