MAIL SERVICE TO HANMER

Application Refused An application by Amuri Transport, Culverden (Mr S H. Wood), to carry mail from Christchurch to Hanmer Springs and return with exemption from rail restriction was dismissed by the No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr J. S. Haywood). The applicant stated that people living in Waipara and Culverden could get their mail three hours earlier than at present if the application was granted. He arrived in Hanmer Springs about 7 a.m. daily but had to wait for more than three hours for the railways services to get there before getting the mail, and going on to deliver the newspapers and other perishable goods. Appearing for the railways. Mr F. D. Daly said the loss of the mail business would seriously affect rail revenue. The possible curtailment of services to the area might have to be considered. The authority rejected an application by Sydney David Patchett (Mr R. K. Godfrey) for a new continuous passenger service licence with one car for the carriage of tourists throughout New Zealand during the months of February, March, and April. It was opposed by the Mount Cook and Southern Lakes Tourist Company (Mr M. C. Gresson), the Railways Department (Mr Daly), Pacific Travel Company, and Silver Fern Travel Service (Mr J. A. Bretherton).
