Women’s Golf Title Goes To Southland

Ilovenng on or i ust over P ar f° r most of the match, Mrs N. D. Cullen (Southland) beat Miss C. Sullivan (Avondale), 4 and 3, in. the final of the Canterbury women’s golf championships at Shirley yesterday.

In the morning semi-finals, Mrs Cullen was far too consistent for the former New Zealand player, Miss S. Grigg, and won 3 and 2.

Miss Grigg had her chances but some putting lapses allowed Mrs Cullen to gain a decisive win. Miss Sullivan was fully extended by the highly promising 18-year-old, Miss M. Ensor, and after a stern battle, won 1 up. The final did not produce particularly good golf. Miss Sullivan won the first hole but thereafter she was struggling to contain Mrs Cullen who, although she showed some timidity in her putting, always had a slight edge. Two Up After Six Mrs Cullen played sound golf to the greens. She won back a hole at the second; squared the third and then won the fifth and the sixth to give her a two-up lead. This she retained until the fourteenth when a birdie two put her three up. Although Miss Sullivan fought back valiantly the match ended at the fifteenth when Mrs Cullen won the hole, and the match 4 and 3. After the first hole Miss Sullivan lived dangerously.

Always Mrs Cullen’s drives seemed more accurate and her seconds closer to the pin, whereas Miss Sullivan courted disaster all the time as she tried bold shots to the greens.

But Miss Sullivan had some cruel luck. At the tenth

her putt for a half rebounded from the cup and she experienced the same misfortunes at the ’eleventh, thirteenth and fourteenth.

But always Miss Sullivan was struggling. Her recovery shots kept the match alive but at the fifteenth she missed a vital putt that cost her the match.
