FRIENDLY RIVALRY
Two Apply For Games
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, April 29
Auckland and Christchurch will both battle for the right to stage the 1970 Empire Games but they will do so without any feelings of antagonism or parochialism.
The secretary of the Auckland Amateur Sports Association, Mr A. Moon, and the chairman of publicity of the Empire Games Promotion Society of Canterbury, Mr R. S. Scott, agreed upon this during discussions in Auckland yesterday. Both were keen to avoid any of the ill-feeling that arose during Auckland’s successful bid for the 1950 games.
Today, Mr Moon said the Auckland association was near to drafting its case for the right to hold the games. He said he was quite confident there would be a much happier understanding between the two organisations in the approach for the games than there had been before the 1950 games. “I know this,” said Mr Moon. “If Christchurch’s application is successful, those in Auckland with knowledge of games’ organisation will be only too happy to help the Christchurch people if required.”
