“Bargain” Fine For Athlete (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 28. A representative of the New Zealand cross-country team, Barry John Everitt, attempted to leave Whenuapai airport on an overseas tour during February with £l2O more in currency than he was legally permitted. Sergeant A. Davey told Mr J. A. Wicks, S.M., today. Everitt, aged 27, a carrier. pleaded guilty to a charge of making a false declaration for the purpose of the Finance Emergency Regulations, 1940 (No. 2). He was convicted and fined £25.

“Considering the penalties for this type of offence you are practically getting bargain basement rates,” the Magistrate told Everitt. Sergeant Davey said when Everitt was searched by a Customs officer at the airport, he had 200 United States’ dollars, £44 10s in sterling and £7 in New Zealand currency over and above the amount he had been authorised to take out of New Zealand.
