Liturgical reform should not be confused with a passion for noise, Dr. Mervyn Stockwood, Bishop of Southwark, warned in New York last night. In an address to the fourth episcopal liturgical conference, he appealed for “some corporate silence” rather than a super-abundance of hymns in services. He urged more than 1000 delegates at a conference banquet to avoid becoming too concerned with liturgical technicalities. God would judge not by ritual, but by impact on the outside world, he said.
