Four-Wheelers Pay

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter) LONDON. The vicar of Stoke Newington, near London, has announced that he will henceforth charge £l2 10s for marrying couples who are not regular members of his parish. Regular churchgoers, he said, will continue to be married free. The Rev. Dr. Hugh Fearn said he was not “profiteering” but felt it only proper that “non-

regular” patrons should help to defray the overhead costs of the church. The marriage fees will be used to help pay off a £2OOO debt for building repairs.

Dr. Fearn observed that the Church of England has more than its fair share of “four-wheeler Christians” who show up at church “by perambulator for baptism, by taxi for marriage, and by hearse for burial.”
