Experts Arrive To Inspect Quay
Two executive officers of the Hydraulics Research Station, Wallingford, England, arrived in Christchurch last evening to see the £6m eastern harbour extension. Cashin quay. They are Mr R. C. H. Russell, director of the station, and Captain C. F. Stewart, who is a senior experimental officer specialising in harbour surges, ship movements, ship berthing, and navigation problems. Mr Russell was principal scientific officer at the station when a model study of Lyttelton Harbour was made to test the extension scheme. The tests, which covered three years and were the first made at the establishment, involved the building of two large models to test the effects of short to medium waves, long waves, the tidal flow, ranging at berths, and siltation. Since the first berth at Cashin quay was completed and offiically opened, shipping companies have not used it because they have doubts about the safety of the berth in unfavourable weather. Some of the marine superintendents of overseas shipping companies have already inspected the quay. It is planned that when a storm that may affect the berths is expected all should be present. The Wallingford officers have come to Christchurch at
the invitation of the Lyttelton Harbour Board. Mr Russell will spend three days here, and Captain Stewart may be here a little longer. On Saturday the shipping companies’ marine superintendents will be invited to Lyttelton to meet the visitors.
