Sports Club Fined For Selling Liquor
(N Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. April 27. A non-incorporated sports club had bought 4728 quart bottles of beer from one liquor wholesaler since Christmas, Sergeant G. W. Herbert told Mr A. A. Coates, S.M. The Hokianga Sports Club, which, through its counsel, Mr J. P. Benson, admitted three charges of illegally selling liquor, and one of illegally keeping liquor for sale, was fined a total of £l3O. The liquor, was ordered to be confiscated. The club had previous con-
victions for the same offences, the Magistraet said. Sergeant Herbert said the club had its headquarters in the basement of the secretary’s home in Ponsonby. The police had seized 119 quart bottles of beer and half a gallon of whisky. Mr Benson said the club, formed 12 years ago, took part in an organised Sunday Rugby competition sponsored by the Auckland Maori community. “Several New Zealand and provincial representatives have come from its ranks,” he said.
