BUTTER DOWN
8s Drop In London (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P A.) LONDON. April 26. High stocks of butter in cold stores—6B.loo tons compared with 38,000 tons this time last year—and slower sales have led to a drop in price. The price of New Zealand, Australian, Polish and Austrian butters were cut by 8s per cwt. today—New Zealand and Australian to 3425, Polish to 3325, and Austrian to 3255. Irish fell 12s 6d to 327 s 6d per cwt. Danish and Dutch remained unchanged. The reductions in price, it is hoped, will help to stimulate consumption and reduce stocks. One Tooley street trader said: “There could be some further slight easing during the next few months. It seems unlikely, however, that New Zealand butter will go below 335 s per cwt. The Press Association reported from Wellington that although butter prices had fallen on the London market. New Zealand was expected to have a butter trading surplus of £6.5 million at May 31. the end of the trading year, according to the general manager of the Dairy Board (Mr A. H. Ward).
