NO HELMETS FOR PILOTS
Turtles Given Priority’
(N.Z. Press Association)
BLENHEIM, April 23.
It was frustrating to have two new pilots and no crash helmets for them to wear and then to read that approval had been given for the importation of thousands of miniature turtles from Miami, Mr L. Gatehouse, principal of Aerial Work (Marlborough), said this morning. Mr Gatehouse said he had ordered two crash helmets of American manufacture five months and three months ago respectively. The importers said they could not obtain import licences. Mr Gatehouse said pilots could not be expected to fly without safety helmets. He knew of other firms which were waiting for helmets for their pilots, but it appeared that in spite of the efforts of the Aviation Industry Association, little progress was being made towards obtaining additional import licences. A New Zealand-made crash helmet was unsuitable for use in aircraft, he said.
