Magistrate's Court Fined £20 And Disqualified For Possibly Dangerous Speed
On a charge of driving at e speed which might have been dangerous on Novemoer 8. Roger Aylmer Rattray, aged 19 (Mr P. G. S. Penlington). was convicted and fined 120 and disqualified from driving for one year by Mr E. A. Lee. S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Rattray was also ordered to attend a course of three driving lectures arranged by the Christchurch City Council traffic department. The defendant pleaded guilty. Traffic Sergeant H. J. McMorran said that the defendant was checked by microwave at 58 miles an hour while travelling in Wairakei road towards Aorangi road at 3.30 a.m. on November 8. He was followed for about two miles oy a traffic officer until he turned into a driveway in Merivale lane. The traffic officer travelled at a speed of 60 miles an hour for a considerable distance but was unable to reduce the distance between himself and the defendant. He said the defendant crossed 11 intersections and a railway crossing at an excessive speed. Mr Penlington said that traffic at the time was light, it was early in the morning. REMANDED Pier Maria Silva, aged 21, was remanded on bail to April 15 on a charge of being idle and disorderly in that she had insufficient lawful means of support at Lyttelton on April 12. She pleaded not guilty. Alexander Currie Wingate, aged 18,- was remanded on bail to April 29 on a charge of obtaining £l2 by a false pretence at Hamilton on February 26. (Before Mr H. J. Evans, S.M.) COMMITTED FOR TRIAL Stephen James Bird, aged 24. a contractor, was committed for trial in the Supreme Court on charges of stealing £lO6, the property of Shirley Joy Goodwin, and fraudulently using £l5 received from Nora Gertrude Edna Robb. He pleaded not guilty to both charges, and was represented by Mr C. B. Atkinson. The evidence was heard on Monday, and the Magistrate reserved his decision. Bird was granted bail. FINED £l5 On a charge of driving at a speed which might have been dangerous in Linwood avenue on December 5, Borton Alexander Smaill, a fibreglass worker, of Dunedin, was fined £l5. His driver’s licence was cancelled for one year but the suspension was deferred for three weeks. Smaill, who pleaded not guilty, was represented by Mr G. R. Jovce. Traffic Officer J. R. Krippner said that at 6.5 p.m., he checked by microwave a car driven by Smaill at 58 miles an hour. FINED £l2 Donald McNicol Haynies, a drainlayer, was fined £lO on a charge of exceeding 30 miles an hour on the Main North road.
