WIRING COSTS
Underground Cheaper? High-tension underground cables could sometimes be laid more cheaply and conveniently than overhead wiring could be renewed, the en-gineer-manager of the Central Electric Power Board (Mr S. E. Slatter) told the board yesterday. Wholesale reconstruction in built-up areas was necessarily slow and costly in labour, involving in most cases pole replacements, and renewal of low-tension distribution and services, he said. Much time was spent in awaiting periods convenient for shut-downs. Outside contractors could more easily be engaged for cable-laying than for overhead work. These conclusions had been reached after careful costing of underground high-tension cables laid recently in Epsom and Buchanan’s roads in Hornby, Mr Slatter said.
