Five Points Separated University A, Old Boys
The newly promoted High School Did Boys side provided University A with some stern opposition in the A grade men’s basketball competition last evening, only going down by five points after a long and Interesting struggle. In the first half, University A played good Intelligent basketball and definitely appeared the better team. It led, 16-10, at half-time. Old Boys settled down much better in the second spell and, especially in the final stages, more than held their own.
The scoring rate was not high, University A scoring 28 and Old Boys 23. but the teams set a high standard. The shooting rate is an obvious Indication that shooting skills were not all they might have been, although reasonably sound defence on the part of both sides was partly responsible for that. University's performance was a particularly fine team effort, and scoring was fairly evenly distributed. The former Nelson player, B. Strong, and I. Day had satisfactory games. Old Boys also played as a team effort but almost half the scoring was left to one player. A. Hounsell. Scores: University A 28 (B. Strong 6, I. Day 6, J. Stead 3, M. Askew 4, C. Morris 3, R. Allan 2, G. Williams 2) beat High School Old Boys 23 (A. Hounsell 10, R. Milligan 5, G. Fracis 4. P. Bell 2, G. Orchard 2).
University B gained a comfortable, 35-26, win over Burnham, but only after subduing a particularly strong rally by the army players in the early stages. R. Zacharlassen, W. Smith and P. Jack were very prominent for University, the lump shooting of the former two players being particularly accurate. C. p. Dyson was Burnham's outstanding player. His hard driving found many gaps in the University B defence. Scores: University B 35 (R. Zachartaseen io. w. Smith 8, P. Jack 8, P. Sharp 7, D. Young
2) beat Burnham 26 (C. P. Dyson 10, A. G. Ward 8, R. D. Tait 6, B. G. Watson 2).
A particularly poor first half cost Y-Boys an Important match against the other newly promoted team, Orients. The accurate jump shooting of the Orients players unsettled YBoys badly and it was not until well into the second half that they began to show any sort of control over the game. At half-time. Orients led by the considerable margin of 30 points to 12. In the second half, Y-Boys just managed to hold its own, scoring 21 points to Orients 20.
Scores: Orients 52 <C. Hit 14, A. Young 14, T. Wong 14, Y. Lee 6. P. Kim 2, C. Chee 2) beat Y-Boys 33 (C. Harley 12, B. Stead 8, K. Baker 5, G. Bourke 4, R. Dew 2, N. Vincent 2).
After a fairly alow start, Y.M.C.A. defeated Rex, 37-17. The Rex players almost held their own in the middle stages but the superior fundamental play of Y.M.C.A. finally proved too much for it.
Lower grade results were:— Under 20.—Christ’s College A 35, Rex E 6; Shirley B.H.S. A 17, Y-Boys F 2; Y.M.C.A. E 18, St. Andrew’s B 18; Christchurch B.H.S.
