TEAM NOT IN BEST FORM
Dissatisfied Selectors
Dissatisfaction with the performances of members of the Canterbury team at the national swimming championships at Dunedin was expressed by Mr D. W. Cain, convener of the selectors, at the quarterly delegates meeting of the Canterbury centre last evening. Mr Cain tabled a schedule of times and comparisons of the Canterbury team based on their performances during the season, and related to their Dunedin performances. "First impressions are that our team did not swim up to their top form,” he said. There were only eight swimmers who Improved their times, as opposed to 21 swims where times were poorer than swimmers’ best. "Quite frankly, there were only two swimmers, Tul Shipston and Mark Hindle, who really improved,” said Mr Caln. “Four of the other improvements were less than a second, in two cases .Msec. “Based on known experience both in New Zealand and overseas, it is expected that about one-third of the performances could be down,” he said. "However, our team’s performance left much to be desired in this direction," said Mr Caln. "We don’t want to give the impression that our swimmers misbehaved, but dedication and a higher mental approach, as opposed to a light-hearted approach, is very definitely needed in Canterbury.” A motion, that Canterbury recommend to other swimming centres that the 1966 national championships be held In Dunedin and not Napier, was narrowly lost.
