BOUGHT TV SET FOR HOSPITAL
A feature of the year’s work had been the raising of £2OO to purchase a television set for the Malvern Hospital, it was reported at the annual meeting of the Mid-Canterbury provincial executive of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers at Ashburton.
Membership had increased steadily during the year, and stood at 663, in 17 branches, said the retiring president (Mrs E. C. Oakley). Apart from giving invaluable service in the community, W.D.F.F. interests had spread overseas, especially to Fiji, where the organisation had been responsible for the training of three Fijian women in homecrafts and cooking, said Mrs O. A. Wells, a Dominion councillor, at the meeting.
These women were now in great demand and were spreading their knowledge among their villages, Mrs Wells said. Sewing machines had been supplied to assist in their work. In the New Zealand field, four new bursaries are to be set up by W.D.F.F. to enable children from remote country areas to attend a secondary school. The first of these begins next year. These bursaries, of which there are already two in operation, provide for four years of secondary schooling. The fortieth anniversary of W.D.F.F. will be marked by celebration at the forthcoming Dominion conference to be held in Wellington in July.
