SCHOOL FEE INCREASED
Aranui Board Decision
The Aranui High School board of governors yesterday decided to increase the activities fee from 32s 6d each to £3 for one child and £5 for two or more, but the homecraft fee of 10s will be abolished.
The activities fee will now provide annual appropriations for the gymnasium fund as well as for the parentteacher association subscription, sports equipment, certain library and classroom materials, and free admission to performances by cultural groups visiting the school. The parent-teacher association reported to the board yesterday that an increase of up to 30s would be acceptable. The board discussed the matter in committee and afterwards announced its decision.
The announcement said that, although the school had held three successful fairs and other parent-organised efforts to raise funds, general feeling in the school now was that contributions would be more equitably spread by an increased annual subscription.
A preference survey last year on an increased fee versus more combined efforts brought an evenly-divided return but another this year (about the time of the recent fair) showed a decided preference for a larger general subscription. A gymnasium is the school’s next major project. The headmaster (Mr W. J. A. Brittenden) reported to the board that the school needed changing rooms for- outside sports and, if these were applied for now, they could be so aligned that they could become part of the future gymnasium.
