LONDON, April 13.
Britain’s petrol price war warmed up today when four firms announced price cuts after similar moves last week by the oil giants ShellMex and British Petroleum.
The big companies announced reductions of 2d and 3d a gallon for grades. Today’s reductions by Jet, Conoco, Murco and C.I.P. bring the price of their brands down by about the same amount—to stay an average of 3d a gallon cheaper than corresponding brands of the big companies. The profit margin of the dealers would not be affected by the move, the four companies said. Petrol prices in Britain vary according to the grades and brands.
The lower grade of petrol for most popular brands was 4s 9d to 4s lOd a gallon. The medium grade was 5s to 5s 2d a gallon and super grade was up to 5s 6d a gallon. The price cuts announced by Jet and V.LP. today reduced their standard grade petrol by Id a gallon to 4s lid—3d a gallon cheaper than the new price for equiva-
lent grades (premium) of the B.P. and Shell petrols. Jet 100—the firm’s best petrol—would now cost 5s 2d, while the lowest grade—Jet 94—remained at 3d cheaper than the new price for the mixed lowest grade of the B.P. and Shell companies.
