‘Horrified’ Attacker
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, April 13. A Glasgow youth who had seen people hit on the head on television was “truly horrified” by what happened when he attacked a man with a brick, a Glasgow Court was told yesterday.
He fractured the man's skull and lacerated his face.
The youth, John Gallacher, pleaded guilty to having assaulted a butcher, John Joseph Murray, and robbed him.
The defending counsel, Mr Maurice Smyth, said that Gallacher did not appreciate the seriousness of hitting Mr Murray on the head with a brick.
“It is a daily sight on television that people are bounced on the head,” he said. “They recover five minutes later.
“It has truly horrified this boy that the man went to hospital at all. “He had no conception or idea that by striking the man over the head he would be disabled to the grievous extent that he was.”
The Judge adjourned the case until April 26 for personal and detention centre reports.
