APRIL 14 THE WAIMAKARIRI EXPEDITION Cobb’s coaches returned to town last night, having penetrated the headwaters of the Waimakariri, about 100 miles from Christchurch. We shall be able to-morrow to give full particulars of the expedition, in the meantime we learn that this exploration to the headwaters of the Waimakariri proves that there is no outlet at all from the basin of that river to the westward, all the streams rising in valleys which lead into the Teramakau, or its branches. The only passes are to the north; none to the west. Mr Dobson is getting on rapidly with the track by the Bealey down the Otira Valley. We regret to state that a serious accident occurred to Mr Armstrong, one of the party, who was crushed by a rolling boulder
near the top of a mountain in the north-west gorge, and severely injured. He was however brought home, and is doing well. Messrs. Harman, Browning, and Johnston have gone on by Lake Lyndon to explore the Maori track by the Rakaia. SOUTHERN TELEGRAPH. The Southern line of telegraph is now completed, the last post having been erected opposite the General Government Telegraph Office, Gloucester street, yesterday afternoon. The wires are also stretched the whole distance to Invercargill via Dunedin, a distance of about 400 miles. The only thing required to bring the line into operation is the erection of the various stations along the line, and the appointment of officers; a work which we believe is to be commenced at once.
