Two Polo Tourneys In April
FpWO polo tournaments are to be held in Canterbury during April. The first, organised by the Amuri Club, is to be held at Culverden on Easter Saturday and Sunday. On April 22, 23 and 24 the second tournament will be held at Addington.
It is expected that teams from Cheviot, Kaikoura, Amuri, Ashburton, Ashley and, possibly, Eastern Southland, will take part. The Amuri team recently competed in the Savile Cup competition—the first Canterbury team to do so since 1929—with reasonable success. Amuri gained two victories in the four tournament matches. Another
match, designed to elevate the standard of play, was held with five New Zealand representatives playing for the two teams. T. Douglas, one of the highest handicapped players in the country, R. Walker, who plays on a five handicap, J. McKenzie (four), W. Sherriff (four) and R. Hewitt (three) gave valuable experience and assistance to the players. It Is hoped that two matches against a touring Western Australian team will be played in Canterbury next January. The greatest burden for the organisers is the expense that would be entailed in bringing the Australians, and a team from the North Island to oppose them, to this province. If the negotiations are successful, local teams will oppose each other in two curtain-raisers.
