FREIGHT AT PICTON
Waggons Held For Holidays (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 12. A backlog of over 60 loaded waggons will remain in the Picton marshalling yards over Easter, as a result of the decision of the seamen in the Aramoana not to make a second trip on Saturday night. The rail-road ferry controller, Mr J. J. Nolan, said today the ship was engaged on double running Monday to Friday and normally ran only on Saturday morning to Picton.
“The backlog is only railway waggons, not cars,” he said. “We advised the Union Company last Wednesday that we wanted this special sailing and all the parties involved should have known on that day.”
The seamen, however, notified the captain three-quarters of an hour before the 10 a.m. sailing on Saturday that they would not make a second crossing.
