LECCO (Italy), April 12.
Hometown fans of the Lecco soccer team became so infuriated over the referee’s decisions in a 2-2 drawn game with Verona that they swarmed on the field, stoned the referee, smashed dressing room windows and injured three policemen. About 30 fans, led an angry invasion of the field twice during the game today. Both times
police forced them back into the stands. When the game was over fans hurling debris and stones chased the referee, Giuseppe Marengo, into the dressing rooms. Howls of disapproval had greeted many of his pen-alty-awarding decisions during the game.
The Verona team’s dressing room windows were smashed by the mob. The windows of the referee’s car were shattered and the windows of a police van broken.
