SYDNEY’, April 12.
Jeering Yugal supporters jabbed umbrellas and threw punches at South Coast United players in a melee after their soccer match at Woonona Oval, Wollongong, on Sunday. South Coast's masseur, Les Griffin, was injured when an umbrella was broken over his head as he tried to shield a player. His cheek and ear were bruised.
The trouble began when Yugal’s goal-keeper.
Ilja Djukic. had his nose
broken after being accidentally kicked in the face in the first five minutes of the game.
He dived for the ball in the goalmouth as South Coast's centre-for-ward. Max Tolson, tried to score. Tolson missed the ball and wicked the goalkeeper instead. Djukic. who also suffered mild concussion, was carried from the field and treated at Bulli District Hospital. He was later allowed to leave. As the full-time whistle went, Mr Griffin and Tolson’s father, Mr Norman Tolson, took up positions on each side of the centreforward. As they hurried up the ramp between rows of booing spectators one fan jabbed an umbrella at Tolson's face.
The masseur managed to deflect the blow but was savagely struck over the back of the head with another umbrella.
Other South Coast players struggled through the spectators to the dressingrooms.
Yugal had gone to an early 2-0 lead in the game but was unable to withstand South Coast's strong finish and lost 3-2.
