Carpet In School Not For Luxury
The laying of carpet in a room at the Heaton Intermediate School recently caused some raised eyebrows on the mistaken impression that this was a touch of luxury.
In fact the carpeted floor is in an observation room from which student teachers and others in such model schools can watch children at work unseen and unheard. On the classroom side children see a large mirror. On the observation side the glass appears as a window through which watchers may see and
hear without being seen or heard. There are a number of such devices in Christchurch in training institutions where it is important that children be seen naturally without the distractions of an audience.
Microphones in the classroom pick up the slightest sound so that if a chair is scraped it comes through on the observation room speaker as a blast. The carpet at Heaton is being installed to deaden such effects and even out the general level of sound heard.
A similar arrangement will probably be made at the Elmwood Normal School.
