Trip For Sir Ronald Algie
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 12. Sir Ronald Algie, Speaker of the House of Representatives, will represent New Zealand at a meeting of Commonwealth Speakers in London in the middle of June. As the next session of Parliament opens on May 27, and Parliament will be in session during his absence, the chairman of committees, Mr R. E. Jack, is expected to take the Speaker’s place.
Provisions for the ehairman of committees to deputise for the Speaker are laid down under Parliamentary standing orders.
Sir Ronald Algie’s visit to London will extend from June 15 to June 29, and he: will be the guest of the | United Kingdom branch of: the Commonwealth Parlia- ■ mentary Association. While he is in London. Sir Ronald Algie will attend celebrations associated wifh the 700th anniversary of the meeting of Simon de Montfort’s Parliament in 1265. He will also attend the 750th anniversary of the signing of Magna Carta by King John before the barons at Runnymede in 1215. Announcing the visit tonight the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said the presence of Commonwealth Speakers in London would provide the opportunity for a series of discussions on Parliamentary procedure and practice. Sir Ronald Algie will leave Auckland for London on Juqe 12.
