HOAXERS LOSE
Rille Had No Hammer
(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, April 12.
Members of the second party of delegates to the eighth Commonwealth mining and metallurgical congress to visit the Buller district were met at Berlins on Sunday by two shabbily dressed prospectors, a Maori and a European, who asked for a lift to Westport. Most of the visitors were taken in by the hitch-hikers until an observant engineer noticed that the rifle carried by one was a vintage model without a hammer.
The visitors, mostly South Africans, were alarmed during lunch at Murchison by the earthquake, which, the publican said, had been timed for 10.30 a.m. but had been deferred for their benefit.
The two groups met many people interested in mining in the Buller.
Each visitor was given material on Buller’s mineral deposits, including a booklet printed by the Mines Department and the Geological Survey for the Buller Chamber of Commerce.
The mining experts heard talks on the district and were taken to places of interest.
