EXECUTIVE TO RUN
Small Entry For Race
The six members of the Canterbury Road Runners’ Association executive will compete in the “New Brighton 50” road race on Saturday. Only five runners have entered and the executive decided to enter rather than cancel the race.
An emergency meeting of the executive was called on Tuesday evening when a group of New Brighton businessmen informed the association they intended to withdraw their support from the race.
This group has sponsored the race in previous years but withdrew because of lack of information on entries for the race.
But Mr J. Stuart, association secretary, said yesterday the sponsors had been informed of the poor response for the race some weeks ago. It was not until this week the association could provide the number of entries as these closed last Saturday. “It has been the association’s view the race should be staged only every two or three years,” said Mr Stuart. “It is possible the New Brighton businessmen will accept this arrangement.” The race will begin at Hawarden at 9 a.m. on Saturday and last year’s winner, C. Frethey (Wellington), will be among the starters. Another competitor will be 18-year-old D. Kennedy (Waimate).
Substitute.— The Western United goal-keeper, D. Wells, has been brought into the Auckland soccer team which leaves on Friday for New Caledonia as a replecment for the f injured A. Stroud.
