St. Andrew’s Leading Schools’ Yachting

After the sailing of two of the four heats, the St. Andrew’s College boat, Claymore, leads in the intersecondary schools Junior Cherub yachting contest Burnside High School is a close second.

Yesterday's heat, sailed from the Pleasant Point Yacht Club in a light easterly breeze, was won by the Christchurch Boys’ High School boat Mirage, sailed by B. Sutherland and M. Graham. Mirage passed the early leaders, Pegasus (Aranui High School) and Claymore, by intelligent tactics on the windward leg and established a lead which it held to the finish.

Two other races for secondary school pupils were held yesterday. The P class event was won well by this year’s Canterbury representative, Skip, sailed by B. Boulton ;(Linwood High School).

An open handicap race was unfortunately marred by confusion over a mark of the course. As a result the first boat home, Chianne (junior cherub, C. Morgan and B. Dickey), of St. Bede’s College, was disqualified. The race was awarded to the Javelin, Boadicea (R. Mackay and C. White, St Andrew’s College).

Second heat of Pater Mander trophy (seven starters): Mirage <B. Sutherland and M. Graham, Christchurch 8.H.5.), 1; Claymore (C. D. Smith and I. Smith, St. Andrew’s), 2: Pegasus (A. Smith and P. Harrison, Aranui H.S.), 3. Points after two heats: St. Andrew’s, 4,1; Burnside, 4J, 2: Aranui, 6. 3; Christchurch 8.H.5., SI, 4. P Class (nine starters): Skip (B. Foulton. Linwood H.S.). 1: For Sail (P. Turner, St. Andrew's), 2: Snorkel (R. Ellerm. Linwood H.S.), 3.

Open handicap (16 starters): Boadicea (Javelin. R. Mackay and C. White, St. Andrew’s), 1: Okere (O.K. dinghy, P. Nixon, Linwood H.S.), 2: Hihue (Moth, M. Brown, Shirley 8.H.5.), 3.
