Rio Sold To Melbourne
(N.Z. Press Association) HASTINGS. The Hastings three-year-old, Rio, was sold yesterday to the Melbourne trainer, B. Courtney, for an undisclosed fivefigure sum. Rio, which is entered for Saturday’s Hawke’s Bay Cup, will not race again in New Zealand. He will be flown to Melbourne as soon as air transport can be arranged, and will be accompanied on the trip by D. Sellwood, head handler for the trainer, K. Couper, the part-owner of Rio. The other part-owner is Mr B. Watson.
Rio has been bought by Courtney for an overseas syndicate and the colt will be leased for racing by one of his clients, Mr W. L. Ryan, a Melbourne businessman. Rio has been one of the outstanding runners in New Zealand during the current season and last season when a two-year-old. Last season he won five times and ran two places from eight attempts for £3550 in stakes.
This season he has had 10 starts for seven wins, two seconds and a fourth, and £7850, making his total earnings £11,400.
