No Tour Approach By U.S. Footballers
No approach had been received from the University of California Rugby team Io play matches against New Zealand university teams this season, said Mr J. M. Jeffs, secretary of the New Zealand University Rugby Council yesterday when asked to comment on a report from San Francisco that the Californian team which is to tour Australia also hoped to arrange matches in New Zealand.
Mr Jeffs said after the New Zealand Universities team toured the United States and Canada in 1961 there was talk of a return visit from an American side but there had been no official approach from the American Rugby authorities. “I cannot see how we could take an American team this season, particularly with no prior notice,” said Mr Jeffs. “Also there is a New Zealand rule which stops overseas club sides from visiting New Zealand between April 1 and August 31 which would mean the team could not come here unless the New Zealand union gave its approval.”
