Many Sugar Goods ‘Not Reduced’
(New Zealand Press Association) NELSON, March 29. Many commodities containing sugar had not been reduced in price in spite of the reduction in the price of sugar, said Labour Party delegates representing the Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast and Buller electorates at a regional conference of the party in Murchison on Saturday.
“1 am not satisfied the package of sweets still selling at the increased price, does contain more weight since the restoration of sugar prices, as is being claimed,” said Mr F. Devine, of Marlborough. Mrs S. M. L. Davies, of Nelson, and Mr J. Laing, of Westland, recalled the promises of the Government at the time of the increase.
The Government had agreed to accept the responsibility of ensuring any reductions in the world price of sugar were handed on to consumers.
“The Government has not honoured its obligation on this question and appears to be reluctant to act on behalf of consumers,” said Mr W. E. Rowling, M.P. A resolution urging the Government to protect consumers was approved unanimously by the meeting.
