Judge’s Bid

Spiritual Cycle The confirmation ceremony which took place at St. Joseph's Church, Papanui, yesterday afternoon, represented a complete cycle of spiritual events. There were 228 candidates presented for confirmation to the celebrant, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby). Their names will now join his own on the confirmation register, for it shows that Brian Patrick Ashby was confirmed at St. Joseph’s Church by the Most Rev. M. J. Brodie, on May 27, 1934. Mild Day There was further mild, unsettled weather in Christchurch yesterday. The morning was coludy with scattered showers and light southwesterly winds. The sky cleared a little in the afternoon, and the winds changed to light easterlies. Harewood recorded temperatures of 52. degrees at 6 a.m., 58 degrees at noon, and a maximum temperature of 62 degrees at 3 p.m. It was still 62 degrees at 4.30 p.m., according to the indicator on the Government Life building.
Church Innovation
An innovation that is believed to be unique in the Anglican Communion was made in Ashburton yesterday. At the parish church of St. Stephen’s women servers were in the sanctuary for the parish Communion service, and also at evensong. The vicar, the Ven. Archdeacon H. G. Norris, said that this was the first time to his knowledge that this has been done.
Mushroom Tunnels
Mushrooms will continue to grow in the coastal defence tunnels of North Head for another year. The Devonport Borough Council has renewed its permission for the farmer to cultivate his crop, subject to insurance and maintenance of the tunnels. Anzac Film Amalgamated Theatres will fix dates this week for the Anzac film “Toehold in History,” to be shown at art theatres in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. The film was withdrawn from commercial theatres in New Zealand because of unfavourable audience reaction. Apart from several scenes of Gallipoli landscapes, it is devoted to a series of Gallipoli paintings by the Australian painter, Sydney Nolan.
