“The Press” In 1865
MARCH 29 ENGLISH OPINION We published yesterday an article from the Tinies on the subject of New Zealand affairs, called forth by a letter from Mr Fitz Gerald to Mr Adderley, which appeared in the same journal. We print to-day another article from the Times containing a paragraph which it appears has also been widely circulated in England, called, “The Case of New Zealand.” We presume, though the Times does not enable us exactly to identify the work in question, that this pamphlet is a collection of articles which appeared just before the last session of the Assembly in the columns of the Nelson Examiner, and were reputed. we cannot say upon what authority, to be from the pen of Mr Stafford These two articles in the Times are- very rekmarkabie, as showing a decided altera-
tion in tone. The Times has hitherto taken the part of Sir George Grey, and has abused the colonists indiscriminately. It is plain that the voice of the colonists has been heard in England, and has made so great an impression that the Times is compelled to abandon the attack, and to retreat within its defences. It no longer abuses—but explains and apologises. If it be true that Mr Stafford is the author of the “Case of New Zealand,” then we have the opinions of two great parties into which New Zealand is divided expressed by two of the prominent members of Parliament. In the important part of their statements they agree. Like man and wife however much our politicians may differ amongst themselves, they make common cause against the abuse which has been heaped upon the heads of the colonists in England.
