GOOD STAKES TRIAL BY WAIAU TOA
Further interest was added to the New Zealand Trotting Stakes, which will be run at Addington Raceway on Easter Saturday, when Waiau Toa won the Lyndhurst Handicap at Methven on Saturday. Waiau Toa was slow early, but improved to be mid-field at the mile post. She put in an appearance wide out on the track approaching the final furlong and fought on to win handily.
Waiau Toa, which is raced by Mr M. Smith, of Kaikoura, is trained at West Melton by J. D. Litten, who left on Friday night on his visit to the United States. Waiau Toa was driven on Saturday by Litten’s son-in-law, R. D. Butt. Stormy Moss, a surprise win favourite, was clear by eight lengths racing into the back straight, but broke at the five furlongs, leaving War Scene with a short lead. Waiau Toa challenged at the furlong and got up to win by a length and a half from War Scene, with Boxella a
close third, just ahead of Macrae and Beverley Globe, with a gap to Wayren and another to Convertor.
Driverless A driverless horse played havoc with the field in the Lauriston Handicap. Stella Globe broke after a furlong and a half and her stablemate. Seven Nights, lost his driver and galloped through on the inside of the field, checking most runners. Seven Nights dropped back after passing the mile post and soon afterwards was caught by I. R. Jones, the driver of Marcus Aurelius.
Break Through, trailing a bandage from a hind leg. made the pace, trailed by Del Reno, with the others struggling after a gap. Del Reno had a short lead at the furlong and came on to win by a length and a half from Break Through. Smokey Dillin was 10 lengths back third, seven lengths in front of Notulas, with half a length to Wayleggo. Lottery Song, at odds of almost 21 to 1, upset calculations with a runaway win in the L. L. Richards Memorial Handicap. Lottery Song led over the last six furlongs and drew out under pressure over the final furlong to win by three lengths and a half from Heriot, which was always close up. Colours Flying made up ground for third a
length back, half a neck in front of Dulcie Mae, with Alpine Lady, Terr Lee, Waltz Away and Sir Echo at the head of the others. Paranova trailed to the straight and dropped out to finish near the rear. Buchanan broke at the start and again at the six furlongs, and Main Reason and Noisette lost ground at the start. Rothesay broke at the six furlongs and checked Stormy Lady, Tibet Main Reason and Waltz Away.
