COURTIER AGAIN
Good Win From 12yd
Courtier, winner of the Timaru Nursery Stakes at his previous start, overcame the disadvantage of starting from 12 yards in an unwieldly field to win the Two-year-old Stakes at Methven on Saturday. Johnny Chappelet and Phillmark, which also started from 12 yards, were the next two to finish, both recording splendid performances. Phillmark was very slow away and broke after a furlong and a half. Johnny Chappelet had 16 horses in front of him at the mile post, where Courtier’ was two places further back, four lengths in front of Phillmark, which was making up ground.
Bronze Lad went to the front at the seven furlongs, but Belie Byrd raced clear at the three furlongs. At this point Courtier was dose up, with Johnny Chappelet prominent and Phillmark making ground wide out and not very far back. Courtier took a short lead soon after straightening up. Johnny Chappelet and then Phillmark challenged, but he had too much in reserve and won decisively by two lengths. Johnny Chappelet held second a head in front erf Phillmark, with another head to a bold finisher in Goldmount Roydon Prince finished strongly for fifth, but was two lengths and a half further away, ahead of Par Avion, with a gap to Country John, Mount Eden and First Signal following.
