MYSTERY LIGHT
Various Reports (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Mar. 28. A mystery light flashing across the sky from north to south and vanishing in a red blaze gave Mr T. Nixon, of Veale road, New Plymouth, “a terrific fright” last night Reports of the light about the same time—9.4s p.m.— have been made in Nelson and parts of the West Coast, according to a Press Association message from Nelson. "I was standing on my front lawn which is on a hill slope,” Mr Nixon recalled. ‘■This light came from below the horizon and seemed to be heading straight for me. ‘•lt was glowing and trailing a long white tail. It was so bright it lit up the clouds. “The light swished over my head and seemed to be a red flash, almost like an aircraft crashing, before it vanished on the seaward side of Mount Egrnont.”
The director of the New Plyomuth Observatory (Mr D. W. Daniel) said the light could have been a meteor or a fireball.
