Two Tennis Grades To North Linwood
Matches in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s senior reserve and second men’s grades, scheduled for last Saturday but not played because of rain, will now be cancelled. Both grades had reached a decision and the winners could not be affected by the last matches.
Both grades add. to the glory of the North Linwood club. Its strong team has won the senior reserve for the fifth year in succession': its men’s second grade team has won . for the third in succession, each year the competition has been played. That the club is an extremely strong force in men’s tennis is shown by the fact that the senior men’s team was runner-up at the same time. in the senior reserve, North Linwood did not lose a match with the players, R. Bruce. R. Watson, J. Patrick, J. Beatty and B. Partridge. The points were: North Linwood 201, Linwood Avenue 459, Fendalton 132, Barrington. 119. Beckenham 75, Elmwood 53,, Edgeware 50, Cashmere 43. Second Grade In the men s second grade, K. Baker, G. Palmer. )I. Munnerley and P. Kerr comprised the team. The points were: North Linwood 1 193, Shirley' 173, Riccarton Domain 156, Avonside 1 155, United 115, St. Albans 109, University 104, Linwood Avenue 66, North Linwood •II 57. Redcliffs 50, Avonside II 50, St. Ninian's 20.
The first mixed A grade was the closest of the lower grades for only nine points covered the three leading teams each of which had only one loss. The competition was not decided until the last day. The points were: Avonside 139, Fendalton 134, Cashmere 130, Opawa 106, New Brighton S 3, St. Albans 55. Beckenham - 45, Redcliffs 36. Avonside lost to Cashmere, Fendalton lost to Avonsdde and Cashmere lost to Fendalton. Members of the winning Avonside team Were J. Reader, A. Knight. W. Jamieson,' D. Macdonald, Mrs B. McNichol, Miss S. Peters, Mrs L. Rixon and Mrs D. Macdonald.
> The first mixed B grade was more decisively won by Elmwood with the points: Elmwood 154, Spreydon 137, North Linwood 109, Woolston 101, Avonside 86, St. Paul’s 66, Barrington 55, Univers'ity 20. The Elmwood team, which was unbeaten, comprised G. W. Goodwin, R. A. Quinn, D. M. Warren, J. B. Stringer, Miss J. Bishop, Miss R. Legge, Miss G. Pal'liser, Mrs H. Rear. Divided into two sections as usual, the second mixed grade was won by Addington Catholic when it beat Waimairi by 11 matches to 5 in the inter-section play-off. The Addington Catholic team was P. D. Cunningham, P. J. Ives, H. P. Batchelor, B. D. Clark, Misses S. Dunne, P. Gleeson, L. Owens.
Points were.—Section 1: Addington Catholic 133, Edgeware 113, St. Ninian’s 85, Shirley I 73, Fendalton 61, Opawa 48, St. Mary’s 31. Section 2: Waimairi 111, Elmwood 104, South Christchurch 102, Spreydon 53, Avonside 44, Shirley 44. The president’s grade was won by St. Albans. The points were. St. Albans 135, South Christchurch 109, Opawa 76, Edgeware 68, Linwood Avenue 52, W’aimairi 16, Barrington 6. The winning team was F. F. Teear, R. D. Wright, Mrs V. Teear and Mrs V. Forrest.
