SEEKING SPONSORSHIP OF MORE CHILDREN

Sponsorship of children through the Save the Children Fund could do a great deal to bring peace to the world. This opinion was expressed by the president of the North Canterbury branch of the fund (Miss M. G. Havelaar) at the committee’s monthly meeting in Christchurch yesterday.

Miss Havelaar spoke of a couple in Christchurch who had sponsored a child some years ago, and now wished to make contact with the family again. “If people in less fortunate countries feel that New Zealanders are interested in them and want to help, then we will come much closer together,” she said.

The North Canterbury branch has sent £2l to the Save the Children Fund’s clinic in Pusan, Korea. This Will be used to buy dried milk, which is very scarce in Korea.

Progress of four students who received £l2O from the branch was detailed. Twelve boys are now doing vocational training on grants received from New Zealand branches.

Italian Orphanage

Three cases of clothing were sent by the branch to an orphanage in Italy and had been very gratefully received.

“The orphanage accommodates about 90 girls, aged from six to 21 years old. It is situated in a crowded village in south Italy, where there is little chance for the girls to gain employment,” said Miss Havelaar.

“They work on a fann attached to the orphanage, aritl are taught many practical skills. This is an institution well worth supporting.” A further consignment of clothes will be sent to the orphanage.

Mrs A. G. Dean reported that four cases of clothing had been sent to the Save the Children Fund headquarters in Korea. She said there was still a demand for woollen garments. Miss Havelaar said there

would be a good representation of branches from all over New Zealand at the national conference in Christchurch on April 2 and 3. Brigadier T. W. Boyce had recovered after being involved in an accident during his tour of the North Island, and would be attending the conference. Mr D. Wells, recently returned from a tour of Greece, where he had met a Greek child which his family had sponsored, would be an additional guest speaker.
