CANOEING BOYCOTT

“Massed Start

Dangerous”

(N.Z. Press Association)

WAIROA, March 26.

"I feel the objections being voiced by the Auckland clubs are miscalculated at this juncture,” said Mr W. J. M. O’Connell, president of the New Zealand Canoe Association.

He was commenting on the decision of Auckland clubs to boycott the 144-mile Wanganui river race at Easter. These clubs are claiming the massed start will -be dangerous and that the handicap system is unfair. Mr O’Connell said he is quite satisfied with the safety precautions taken by the association's racing committee. The competitors will be starting in a Le Mans type of start from the banks. The clubs objecting were represented at the recent executive meeting where the race conditions were approved.
