ECLIPSE OF FERRARIS
Ford GT Wins At Daytona
(N.Z. P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) DAYTONA BEACH (Florida), Feb. 28.
Ford GT prototype driven by the Americans, Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby, tonight won the 2000-kilometre Daytona Continental road race after mechanical trouble forced out the favoured Italian Ferraris.
Ford-powered cars dominated the race over 327 laps around the high banks of the Daytona International Speedway and the twisting road circuit laid out in the infield.
The Miles-Ruby car covered the course in 12 hours 27 minutes and nine seconds at an average speed of about 99 miles per hour.
It took the lead about twothirds of the way through the race when the three Ferraris retired and held it to the finish.
Ford-powered cars swept the first four places in the race, the longest in the United States.
Second place went to a production Ford Cobra driven by Joe Schlesser, of Paris, and Harold Keck. Another Ford Cobra, driven by Rich Muther and John Timanus, took third, and fourth went to the Californians Richie Ginther and Bob Bondurant, in another Ford GT prototype.
