Monetary Council’s Report

Sir,—The Monetary and Economic Council has access to information not readilv available to the general puK !!%. tt . IS fh eref ore very difficult to follow some of its suggestions for stabilising the country’s economy. Overseas funds are down, so we use up our small reserves by liftmg import controls; softpedal the direct-tax method but hit the average wageearner harder by the indirecttax method, one of the mainstays of the previous Government. The Government is doing all in its power to obtain the best possible prices for our meat, butter, cheese and wool, as well as create new markets wherever possible. Industry needs assistance, but not at the expense of our primary producer. We must sell before we can buy. —Yours, etc., F.W.P.F. February 27, 1965.
