Hurunui Only Country Winner

Teami from the Canterbury lawn tennis eub-asso-ciations did not have as much success as they usually have when they had their annual day in town at Wilding Park on Satur-

day. The country teams can usually win two, three or even four of the six matches but this time they could take only one.

Hurunui was the hero. Sometimes the Cinderella of country tennis, Hurunui has a good record in recent years. After not winning against Town for many years it succeeded in 1962 and 1963 and again this year. Probably the team was elated and given added confidence by its uncustomary win in a Browning Shield match over North Canterbury recently. The women and not the men are the strong players on the Hurunui side. They won five of six singles, the three women's doubles and helped to win four of the six mixed doubles. The men could win only one singles and two doubles.

At the top of the women's team Mrs V. Thomson, formerly Miss V. Moir, and Mrs S. Dalzell formerly Miss S. Elsom, have both represented Canterbury, and they both won their singles and their doubles as they have a number of times in the past. Town won the other five contests but four were close—v. Mid-Canterbury, 15-9; Ellesmere 13-11; Malvern. 14-10; and Banks Peninsula, 17-7. The only comfortable win was over North Canterbury, 20-4, and this was surprising because North Canterbury won seven years in succession from 1957.

Most interesting of the Individual matches were those in which Miss C. Andrew (Town) beat Miss H. Bruce (Mid-Canter-bury), reserve for the Nunneley Casket team. 9-8; L. G. Milne, of Banks Peninsula, took J. Martin, recently top for Canterbury to 9-8: K. B. Allin (North Canterbury) took six games from the present top In Canterbury, W. Thom, and J. Mitchell the outstanding junior, conceded W. Wyllie (North Canterbury), only one game. The Country teams were more successful in the junior section where North Canterbury, Ellesmere and M'ld-Canterbury won. Results:— SENIOR Town v. Mid-Canterbury Men's Singles.—B. Aldridge beat A.
